Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration

The Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration is the elaborate title for a data visualisation project realised during my time as a student at the ZHdK. It follows the first European explorers on their adventures to the southern hemisphere. Initially we focused our research on the record setting expeditions but after a while discovered the stories behind the parties heading south and the arms race between nations to be the first to raise their flag at the center of the southern pole.

The user learns briefly about the current state of affairs in Europe and once they start scrolling their way south the story progresses. At every point, more information can be accessed through hovering over the individual lines to learn more about the specific expeditions. Once the first party of adventurers reaches the vast icy landmass of antarctica we focus our attention on the advancement made land inwards. Here the true hardship of the journey started for many of the expeditions.

Additionally, we successfully entered the project for a data visualisation conference in Helsinki Finland called Visualising Knowledge and were able to exhibit our work on their campus at Aalto University.
