Domleschg

During my tenure as a freelance designer in 2015, I had the opportunity to work on a multitude of projects for the Domleschg. At the time the Domleschg just formed through the merging of a few smaller municipalities and therefore was in need of a new website, design of print material, a redesign of a small quarterly magazine called Novitads and most importantly a new coat of arms.

Obviously, at this point, this is a bit of an older project. But I think it's important to take the time to look back a little and see what you used to make. And there might be a remake for the website on the horizon so potentially check back soon for updates.

Coat of Arms
Designing the coat of arms was interesting, to say the least. Not hugely challenging from a graphic design standpoint as most of the colourways and the main themes were already predetermined. The region is known for its apple trees and thus lends itself well as a representation of all the municipalities as apples on the tree. However, the process of getting it officially approved was a different story. A municipal coat of arms has to meet certain standards of contrast, simplicity and symmetry.

Website
It's a colourful, box-style interface. The goal of the website was to make it accessible to everyone and so I tried to avoid using many UI elements which may not be clear for less experienced users. Behind it is a simple CMS on which the administration can easily change and add content to the site. Not sure how well it aged and certainly could use a touch-up here and there but overall the feedback has been good so yeah.

Novitads
The Novitads is a quarterly released magazine originally centred around the topic of living in the Domleschg at an advanced age. So the typography had to be big enough with clear contrasts whilst not cluttering the design. Throughout the years we have gradually changed the design to end up at the point where we are today.
